Question: Would Chinese Embassy in Jakarta comment on the recent incident in PT GNI?

Answer: We, as the Indonesian Government did, condemn this vile incident, during which the violent breaking into the industrial park caused casualties of Chinese and Indonesian staff and damage of facilities in the park.

The Chinese Embassy in Jakarta attaches high importance to the incident and has sought and verified relevant information at the earliest time possible. According to the local government and police, a handful of outlaws incited the incident out of their own demand. They forcibly trespassed into the premise, intimidated and kept the staff from working, and committed assault, vandalizing, looting and arson. The incident caused the death of one Chinese and one Indonesian staff with many injured and some equipment and facilities damaged. The production in the industrial park was brought into halt. Local staff were kept from working. Economic and social activities in the park and surrounding areas were significantly affected. This has undermined the interests of the overwhelming majority of the public.

We take note of the swift measures taken by relevant departments of the Indonesian Government and local authorities to put the situation under control and start investigation. They expressed no tolerance to such illegal activities, and determination to safeguard people's interests and protect the legal environment and common interests of trade and investment cooperation between Indonesia and other countries. The Chinese Embassy in Jakarta is committed to defending the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese citizens and companies in Indonesia, and will continue to keep in touch with the Indonesian Government.
