Remarks of the Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in Indonesia on the Erroneous Remarks by the Head of Taiwan's Foreign Affairs Department

The Chinese Embassy in Indonesia firmly opposes the remarks by Wu Zhaoxie (Joseph Wu), head of Taiwan's foreign affairs department, in an interview with CNN Indonesia on 10 January, which disseminated "Taiwan independence" and separatist rhetoric, provoked regional tension and undermined China's friendly relations with other countries.

First, there is but one China in the world, Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory, and the Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China. This has been clearly recognized by United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 of 1971. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, 182 countries have established diplomatic relations with China on the basis of the one-China principle. The one-China principle is a universal consensus of the international community and a basic norm in international relations.

Second, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities have adopted a separatist stance, and colluded with external forces in successive provocative actions designed to divide the country. They have steadily built up their military forces with the intention of pursuing "independence" and preventing reunification by force. They try to sow the seeds of "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan". The actions of the DPP authorities have resulted in tension in cross-Straits relations, endangering peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits, and undermining the prospects and restricting the space for peaceful reunification. It is the DPP authorities who are undermining the status quo in the Taiwan Straits, becoming the biggest source of chaos against peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits and even the Asia-Pacific region.

Third, Asia-Pacific region is where we call home. Like Indonesia and other ASEAN countries, China is more concerned about the security and stability of the region than any external forces. Long-term peace and stability must be built on the basic norms of international relations. That is why no behavior undermining those norms should be tolerated. It is hoped that regional countries will work together to firmly uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and the basic norms of international relations, and firmly oppose any interference in the internal affairs of other countries and any encouragement of separatist activities.
