On 16 May 2024, the Chinese Embassy in Indonesia held “Stay True to Original Aspirations and Forge Ahead Together” themed reception in Jakarta. Minister Zhou Kan of the Embassy delivered a keynote speech. H.E. Sultan Najamudin, Vice Speaker of DPD, Dr. Sukamta, Vice Chairman of the committee for Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation and Director of International Relations of PKS, Mr. Irawan Ronodipuro, Director of Foreign Relations of Gerindra Central Committee, and Ms. Dian Islamiati Fatwa, Deputy Secretary General of PAN gave their remarks respectively. Also presenting at the event were over 70 representatives from all walks of life in Indonesian such as Government, parliament, political parties, military, police, religious organizations, think tanks and colleges, and media.
Minister Zhou Kan reviewed the fruitful results of China-Indonesia relations development in recent years, and said that last month marks the 74th Anniversary of diplomatic ties between our two countries. The Chinese people often say, "Only by staying true to our original aspirations, can we accomplish our mission." Reviewing our bilateral relations, our original aspirations, and also the most precious experience, except the principle of strategic autonomy, mutual trust, win-win cooperation, and fairness and justice, more importantly, we always firmly support each other in safeguarding sovereignty, security, and development interests, and on issues involving each other's core interests and major concerns. Both of our two countries once suffered from foreign aggression and achieved national independence and liberation through arduous struggles. Our two peoples cherish the hard-won independence as much as our own lives. We will spare no effort to firmly defend national unity and territorial integrity. Pancasila proposed by President Sukarno highlight “The unity of Indonesia”. We Chinese are still striving to resolve the Taiwan question and achieve complete national reunification.
Minister Zhou Kan highlighted some basic facts and background about the Taiwan question:
First, Taiwan has been an inalienable part of China since ancient times. It has never been a country. This has a solid historical and legal basis and is affirmed by international legal documents such as the 1943 Cairo Declaration and the 1945 Potsdam Proclamation. Although complete reunification across the Taiwan Strait has not yet been realized, China's sovereignty and territorial integrity have never been and can never be divided. China’s complete reunification is only a matter of time. It is an inevitable historical trend that no one can stop or change.
Second, in 1971, UNGA Resolution 2758 completely resolved the issue of China’s, including Taiwan’s representation in the UN. The so-called "representatives" of Taiwan were expelled from the UN. Not only did it confirm that there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is part of China, but it also shut the door of "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan." This important resolution has full authority and validity. Any attempt to question, distort or even deny this resolution is invalid and will never succeed.
Third, the One China Principle is a consensus unanimously recognized by the overwhelming majority of the global community. To date, 183 countries have established diplomatic relations with China on the basis of the One China Principle. This fully demonstrates that sticking to the One China Principle represents the trend of the times and the aspiration of people.
Fourth, the peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait still faces threat by "Taiwan independence" forces. With external support, they keep engaging in separatist activities in Taiwan, and attempt to compromise the One China Principle outside the island. They are real troublemaker and saboteur of regional stability and world peace. As long as "Taiwan independence" forces do not perish along with the external helping forces, a serious threat to peace will remain. Therefore, resolutely opposing and curbing "Taiwan independence" is not only in China's interests, but also in the common interests of the international community. It should be a shared responsibility of all. Adhering to the One China Principle is to defend justice. Opposing "Taiwan independence" is to safeguard peace.
Minister Zhou Kan pointed out that the Indonesian Government always firmly uphold the One China policy, which is the most important political foundation for our bilateral relations. During President Jokowi's visit to China last year, the two countries issued a joint statement on deepening comprehensive strategic cooperation. In the statement, the Indonesian side reaffirms its firm commitment to the One China policy, and goes further to explicitly express its firm support for the Chinese Government's efforts to achieve peaceful reunification. China highly appreciates this. At the same time, China also expresses its firm support for Indonesia’s efforts to maintain national unity and territorial integrity. We firmly believe that as long as the two countries remain true to our original aspirations, render mutual support, and continue to consolidate the political foundation including the One China Principle, China-Indonesia relations will withstand the test of any changes, and we will forge ahead hand in hand on our respective paths to modernization and a more promising future.
Vice Speaker Sultan Najamudin, Vice Chairman Dr. Sukamta, Director Irawan Ronodipuro and Deputy Secretary General Dian Islamiati Fatwa spoke highly of China-Indonesia traditional friendship and achievements of the bilateral relations, and stressed that Indonesia always upholds the One China Policy, and firmly supports the Chinese Government's efforts to achieve peaceful reunification. Indonesia is ready to work with China to maintain peace and stability in the region. Guests to the event expressed their firm support to the One China Principle, as well as their expectation and confidence that China and Indonesia will continue to forge ahead together on the path of development.
