On April 24, the Chinese Embassy in Indonesia, together with Fudan University of China and the University of Indonesia, co-organized a seminar themed “Seventy Years of Bandung Spirit: Strengthening Global South Development Amidst Global Challenges” in Bandung, West Java Province, Indonesia. Ambassador Wang Lutong attended the event and delivered a keynote speech. Guests delivered speeches included Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Chairman of the Indonesian National Economic Committee, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Arif Havas Oegroseno, Vice Minister for Tourism and Creative Economy Cecep Rukendi, Indonesian Ambassador to China Djauhari Oratmangun, Indian Ambassador to Indonesia Sandeep Chakravorty, Rector of the University of Indonesia Heri Hermansyah, and Dean of the School of International Relations and Public Affairs of Fudan University Su Changhe. The event brought together over 400 participants, including experts, scholars from Asian and African countries, and representatives from various sectors of Indonesian society.
Ambassador Wang Lutong said that 70 years ago, the Asia-Africa Conference put forth the Bandung Spirit of solidarity, friendship and cooperation, as well as ten principles of state-to-state relations. 10 years ago, Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered an important speech on the promotion of the Bandung Spirit and the advancement of win-win cooperation, proposing key initiatives to deepen Asia-Africa cooperation, expand South-South cooperation, and advance North-South cooperation. These proposals resonated profoundly across the international community. At a time when profound transformations are accelerating and the global landscape is marked by turbulence and complexity, upholding and carrying forward the Bandung Spirit demonstrates its timeless and universal significance—a relevance that transcends both temporal and spatial boundaries. Power politics and bullying is still there. Humanity has once again come to a critical crossroads. Recently, the U.S. stages tariff wars with the whole world. It harms the legitimate rights and interests of all countries and undermines the rules-based multilateral trading system and global economic order. The international community must not stand idly by, the United States cannot act with wanton disregard, and the wheels of history must not be turned backward.
Ambassador Wang Lutong stressed that, China has always been committed to carrying forward and promoting the Bandung Spirit. We will work with the rest of the Global South, including Indonesia, to uphold the international system with the U.N. at its core, call for an equal and orderly multi-polarization and inclusive economic globalization, maintain multilateral trading system and keep intact the global industrial and supply chain. China is deepening comprehensive reform and advancing modernization, which will also bring new opportunities for the Global South. China stands ready to strengthen solidarity and cooperation with Asian and African countries, taking the lead in the great endeavor of building a community with a shared future for mankind, and jointly creating a common homeland of peace, tranquility, prosperity, beauty and friendship.
The participating guests spoke highly of the historic and contemporary significance of the Asia-Africa Conference, fully acknowledged China's important role in leading and facilitating self-independence and prosperous development among developing countries, and engaged in vibrant discussions on promoting the Bandung Spirit and enhancing solidarity and cooperation among Global South nations.
