On August 3, 2018, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi of Indonesia on the sidelines of the Foreign Ministers' Meetings on East Asia Cooperation in Singapore.
Wang Yi noted that China and Indonesia are close neighbors, representatives of major developing countries and emerging markets, and natural cooperation partners. Facing the current international situation that is full of uncertainty, China and Indonesia both serve as staunch forces for peace and development in Asia. The importance of China-Indonesia relations goes beyond the scope of bilateral relations. And bilateral relations are of strategic significance at the regional and international level. Both sides should enhance strategic cooperation and deepen strategic mutual trust to promote bilateral relations for greater development. Both sides should implement in real earnest the important consensus reached during Premier Li Keqiang's visit to Indonesia, continue to strengthen high-level exchanges, steadily promote cooperation in major projects including Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway and the regional comprehensive economic corridors. The Chinese side supports Indonesia in hosting the Asian Games and congratulates beforehand the complete success of the Asian Games.
Retno Marsudi thanked the Chinese side for actively supporting Indonesia to host the Asian Games, and expressed that Indonesia and China are not only neighbors, but also major countries in the region as well as very good friends. The two countries have further intensified exchanges and deepened cooperation, which will not only benefit the two peoples but also the region and the whole world. Indonesia will begin its term as non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council next year, and hopes to reinforce communication and cooperation with the Chinese side on international affairs.
Wang Yi noted that the Chinese side attaches importance to the position and role of Indonesia, and stands ready to make joint efforts with the Indonesian side to promote the Foreign Ministers' Meetings on East Asia Cooperation to focus on cooperation and development. Retno Marsudi expressed the willingness to make joint efforts with the Chinese side to contribute positively to propelling cooperation between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and China.
