Beijing, April 12, 2000

H.E.Mr.Abdurrahman Wahid

President of the Republic of Indonesia

Jakarta

Your Excellency,

On the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Indonesia, I have the honor to extend my warmest congratulations to Your Excellency and through you, to the Indonesian people.

The Chinese and Indonesian peoples enjoy a long-standing traditional friendship. Indonesia is among the first group of countries who established diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China after the new China was founded. Within the half century, the relations between our two countries have ever gone through both achievements and setbacks. To our pleasure, during the nearly 10 years period after the resumption of the diplomatic relations, under the spirit of concluding the past and facing the future, the friendly relations between our two countries has been in remarkable progress. We have made highly effective and fruitful efforts to enable our mutual understandings and trust enhanced, cooperation in all fields resumed and promoted. The consensus we have reached during Your Excellency's successful visit to China in 1999 on establishing a long-term and stable relationship of good neighborliness, mutual trust and all-round cooperation is of great significance to the promotion of the development of the relations between our two nations.

China and Indonesia are both big developing countries, sharing same bitter historical experiences. With the international situation undergoing profound changes, we are both facing the common assignments of prospering our own economies and safeguarding the just rights and interests of the developing countries. I believe, with the extended fields of cooperation and a bright prospect ahead, the friendship of good neighborliness would be further consolidated and strengthened.

May the traditional friendship between the peoples of China and Indonesia always remain fresh from generation to generation.

                                                                              Jiang Zemin

President of the People's Republic of China
